Water Meter Types and Uses

Measuring water consumption is known as water metering. It is generally conducted in residential, industrial, and commercial applications. A water meter is a unique device that is used to measure the amount of water you use. Flow speed, the amount consumed, pH of water, conductance, and water quality are several characteristics that it counts. These meters are classified as water meters, ice meters, hygrometers, and moisture meters. This classification is based on their ability to measure water in its different forms and states. This article will tell you about different types of water meters and their uses.

Reading your water meter.

Reading a water meter can often be very hard and confusing. This product is generally used for billing purposes, so it’s essential to read it accurately. The unit of flow commonly used is cubic meters. The meters are read in various ways, and that depends on the type of meter. We can read it digitally as in a straight-reading digital meter,  like a clock-face, or in the form of an electronic connection with a computer. Some of these meters can be read by people while a machine more easily reads others.

Types of Water meters

Water pH meter

Water can be acidic, basic, or neutral, and the water pH meter is used to test this. We can use it to test drinking water, water in an aquarium or a swimming pool. It is used to test the water in pipes; for instance, if the water is too acidic, it can damage the water pipes. In 1936 this device was for the first time to test the pH of lemon juice. But since then, it has improved much, and now we can use it to measure the pH of semi-solids too; however, for this purpose, it uses a special probe.

Water temperature gauge

This device allows you to monitor the temperature of your vehicle’s engine coolant. It ensures that the coolant does not get overheated and causes significant damage to the engine. If a radiator gets too hot, it will crack and lose the water and coolant, ultimately causing an engine breakdown. Such devices are used in other forms to measure the temperature of various other things. For instance, bimetallic stem thermometers are used to measure steamed milk’s temperature, and thermistors are used in water heaters and refrigerators.

Water velocity meter

This device contains a setup that we can use to measure the flow and speed of water in rivers, streams, ditches, and canals. By calculating the rate and depth of water, a hydrologist can estimate the volume of flow. Companies use these meters to ensure that water pipes stay open; if the flow is slower than average, there is a blockage. The beverage industry uses this device to measure the water amount added in chemicals or canned products.

Water flow meter

The suppliers use this kind of meter to evaluate the amount of water used by their consumers. Using this, they estimate the bill the consumer has to pay for using the amount of water. Building owners also use this device to find out any leakage. Flow meters are also used to test water quality in HVAC systems and inject the right amount of water while making concrete.

Salinometer

This one is used to measure the salt content of water. It is commonly used on steamships and in desalination plants to measure the salt content
